Coming soon, a checklist of traditions. See how well you score on the traditional Iranian charts!

Happy Nowruz, 1385!

"Nowruz" (literally "new day") also known as "eydeh nowruz" or just "eyd" (which by itself means "festival", "holiday") is the Persian new year. It takes place at the same moment accross the globe: The moment of the Spring Equinox when the sun crosses the equator.

If you live in California, this event takes place on Monday, March 20th, 2006 at 10:25 am and 35 seconds. am.

Yes. a.m.

For the folks back home in Iran, it takes place at 9:55:35 pm. For more information on time and date and other nowruz counters see our time and date page.

Customs and calendars: bestirantravel.com discusses dates and observances related to Nowruz, Ramadan (a.k.a. Ramezan), Eydeh Fetr, Eydeh Qadir (not sure if that's the right transliteration. Is it "qadir" or "qAder"?), AshurA and Eydeh QorbAn.

As you can tell, a lot of these customs are related to joy, food and renewal, and a lot are related to mourning.
