- Iran Mountaineering Federation has taken a remarkable step towards the development of mountaineering in the
country: They are organizing an Everest expedition in 2005, with a very special characteristic for the
Muslim country. All climbers will be women.
- Women and cars - Laleh Seddigh races around Iran.
Check out this article on women's sports in
Iran. The article focuses on Nassim
Hassanpour, the sole female
athlete Iran sent to the Olympics. Her sport? Marksmanship. It's one of the few sports you
can do in Islamic garb. Actually,
this sport could come in handy and I encourange all Iranian women to take it up. For so many reasons.
That and weren't we all supposed to take up equestrian sports with more vigor? Dude, Iranians invented the
pony express, horse dancing and all that. What happened?
Check out the world's strongest man, Hossein Rezazadeh. When I heard he
won the gold medal for weighlifting, I wanted to rush right out and by his weight training video. The press was calling him
the Persian Hercules. Is that because the Persian press was calling him that? You would think
they would call him the "Modern Rostam." (They can't call him the Persian Rostam. Since Rostam was Persian already. Or was he TurAni?
No, they were the bad guys. Or just the other guys. Where were they geographically? We need a map. And Yikes,
I need to brush up on my mythology. Or just read the comic book).
Alas, all that strongman stuff took its toll. Mr. Rezazadeh had to have knee surgery. Will he ever lift that
much weight again? Will anyone? See, he's a two time world champion and holds every super-heavyweight world record there is.
He can sit there and nurse his knee, it's going to be a while before the, um, Russian SohrAb comes along to take it away. In
the end, of course, it's all so temporary, the power, the
fame...makes you want to read a xayAm
poem right about now. And modify it for the olympic scene.
Sweat. Weights. Barbells to barbells.
