Offering Tea ("chAi") to guests is an important part of t'Arof. Where did tea come from? chAi-na, of course. According to that one internet source, Arabs (and by political association at the time, Iranians) don't mention tea in the historical record until 850 AD! Does this mean King Darius did not have any chAi? What did Rostam drink before fighting divs? What did people ta'Arof in those early expansionist days of the Persian empire?

Definition of ta'Arof:

The Aryanpur Progressive Persian-English dictionary defines t'Arof as "compliments, courtesies, formalities, soft tongue, honeyed phrases, ceremony, pleasantry, offering, serving, representation." To t'Arof (t'Arof kardan) is "to stand on ceremony, to use compliments, to show courtesy, to offer, to make a present of, to serve."
