Bonding with the Persian Alphabet

As I was designing the Persian-English Word magnet kits. I encountered many young Iranians whose first objection to the enterprise was that they could not read Persian. "Honestly, it looks like Chinese to me," they would say.

I soon realized that I would have to put the English transliteration on the back of the magnets as well as a translation, because the translation might not be enough of a hint as to what the Persian word was.

This seemed a sad enough state of affairs to me, but it got even worse. One youth said "don't write it in Farsi at all, just put the transliteration on one side and translation on the other, all with the English alphabet."

Tears come to my eyes. What we have here is a generation of youth that hasn't properly BONDED with the Persian alphabet. There are many reasons for this (see Barriers), but more importantly, there are many REMEDIES, which will be spelled out here.

  • Kids love the alphabet!

  • They make you spend hours reading them stories over and over. Mysterious tales about a cat! A bat! A ball! A mat!
  • Don't deprive them of their alphabets! And feed your inner child its alphabets, too!
