Grammar: Sentence Basics

What is Grammar?

Grammar is the study of sentence structure, the way in which words are put together to make phrases, clauses and sentences. It's the study of the function of words and their relationships, and how it all comes together in a sentence.

What is a Sentence?

A sentence is a complete thought put into words. To be complete, the sentence needs two things, a subject and a verb. The subject is what or who the thought is about. The verb shows the action or state of being.

A sentence can be one word long or be made up of many phrases and clauses. All these things have some simple, underlying rules.

This is the beauty of language. You can create an infinite amount of meaning out of a finite vocabulary and by knowing just a few rules.
